PAWS Dear Parks and Wildlife Supporters,
A Blockbuster movie, “The Day After Tomorrow” has just hit the box offices. In typical Hollywood style, this movie deals with climate change in an extreme way, with water deluging New York City, and Los Angeles turning into an arid wasteland. Climate scientists agree that this view of climate change is extreme, but nonetheless make the point that such events could happen in next 50 – 100 years, although at a much slower pace. Average Spring temperatures in Europe have been two degrees higher than average in the last few years. This is starting to cause problems with the local fauna as some life cycles have been accelerated by several weeks. The impact of this has been noted on Australia's ski slopes. While snowfall is decreasing, the endangered Mountain Pygmy Possum, which needs snow cover to hibernate, is now facing extinction. The issue of global warming, loss of habitat and species extinction is bigger that any one organisation, or indeed any one nation. Nonetheless, if everyone plays only a small role, collectively we can make a difference. The Foundation plays its part by raising funds for special projects which otherwise would remain unfunded. It endeavours to manage its affairs with uncompromising integrity and has a policy of making the Finances as transparent as possible. With Leonie and Carmen at the helm, this dynamic duo have their eyes on delivering projects efficiently with a constant watch on costs, running the office on a shoe string. My association with the Foundation as Honorary Treasurer has been a great pleasure, and I personally derive a great deal of satisfaction in seeing how the generosity of our benefactors has made a difference for the preservation of our country’s wildlife.
